ThE LiTtlE ThinGs...
The last words of Thorin son of Thrain were "Farewell master Burglar. Go back to your books and your armchair. Plant your trees, and watch them grow. If more people valued home above gold, this world would be a merrier place" and Mr. Baggins was like "Hold on...the eagles are coming no no no no" Weuh! I cried. I cried!!!
For some reason, this scene really got to me and got me thinking about how hard we work for the big things that we forget it is and will always be the little things that bring us joy. It was so sad to see how Thorin literally went through the hills and valleys to reclaim his ancestral land but then died even before he got a chance to enjoy what he had worked so hard for. He became obsessed with the gold, riches, and power that he failed to see he had the purest form of joy... people he could call friends. To me, he was a king even before he wore the crown.
I hope we will learn to appreciate the little things more. To look at the sun and feel alive. Listen to the rain and dance. Smell the flowers and giggle. Watch the birds and smile. Spend time with family and friends and feel whole again. I pray that the passing challenges of this world will not change our gentle hearts to bitter souls. No matter how bad things get, may we always hold on to the tiny things. Every day, may we purpose to find delight in the little things, and when we don't find any, may our memories remind us of those glorious days when we did.
When I'm finally gray with age and my time is almost up, I pray to be like Bilbo Baggins who found extreme delight in his friendship with the dwarves. Who spent his last days writing his book in his cute little home with his tiny little hobbit friends. May I look at the stars in the sky one last time and enjoy the night's cool breeze before I finally cross over. When He calls me home I pray I would have lived my all, sang my all, and loved my all, for this is the purpose of human beings, to live and love.
And so I say to you "Go back to your books and your armchair. Plant your trees and watch them grow, for you have valued your home above gold and have therefore made this world a merrier place"
